The short answer

Before walking away, check the seat and boot, take the receipt and preserve the vehicle or booking identifier. For a lost item or fare issue, contact the operator first, then the local regulator or official lost-property channel with time, route, payment and vehicle details.

Understand the decision

01

Capture the minimum evidence

Keep receipt, booking screen, plate or licence number, date, pickup, drop-off, fare and payment method. Photograph details only from a safe place and never collect unnecessary personal data.

02

Act in the useful order

For an app ride use in-app support; for a booked vehicle contact the operator; for a street taxi use the regulator’s lookup, complaint or lost-property service. Contact the hotel or airport too when relevant.

03

Write a factual report

State what happened, the amount or item, the identifiers and the outcome requested. Keep originals, note case numbers and avoid publishing driver details while a case is open.

Common questions

What information best identifies a taxi trip?

Vehicle or licence number, date and time, pickup and drop-off, fare, payment method and receipt or booking reference.

Should I share my full card number to find a lost item?

No. Use only the official channel and never disclose a full payment-card number; an authority may ask for limited transaction details.
